MLS: Team by team preseason notes

D.C. United D.C. United began the second week of preseason training Feb. 19 in chilly but clear conditions at RFK Stadium ... United will train at RFK Stadium in the preseason until departing for MLS spring training in Ft. Lauderdale on March 12 ... Most of the team's roster players were present, including goalkeeper Mike Ammann who had returned to New Jersey last week for personal reasons ... Forward Marco Etcheverry is playing with Oriente Petrolero in Bolivia and his return to the team is expected around March 20 ... Jaime Moreno continues to rehab from late-January knee surgery, and is expected to return to the training pitch in three-four weeks ... Rookie Santino Quaranta joined the club for training last Thursday and Friday before rejoining the United States U-17 side ... Quaranta is expected to join the club fulltime in late April ... Rookie Mark Lisi is continuing his studies at Clemson University, and is expected to join the team for training in March in Florida ... Lisi is expected to join the club fulltime in May after concluding his studies ... Carey Talley is nursing a slight groin strain, which is limiting his training regimen ... Talley is participating in conditioning activities, but will have to sit out the ball work activities for a few more days. MetroStars The MetroStars defeated Icelandic First Division club Fylkir, 2-0, Feb. 17 in a scrimmage at the Hotel Montechoro Soccer Complex in Albufeira, Portugal ... The scrimmage win improved the MetroStars record to 2-0 on their 2001 TAP Air Portugal Preseason Tour ... MetroStars 2001 SuperDraft selections Kerwin Jemmott and O'Neil Peart were impressive in the victory with Peart scoring the first goal of the match in the 27th minute ... The MetroStars scored their second goal in the 57th minute on a strike by Alex Comas with an assist by Ramos ... The MetroStars spent the next day working on further conditioning drills and set pieces during two practice sessions ... The Metros were off Feb. 19 and spent the day visiting Seville, Spain ... Two-a-day practice sessions resumed Feb. 20 ... Amika Wronki, the MetroStars' Polish opponent Feb. 21, was in attendance during the Fylkir scrimmage ... They are staying at the same hotel as the MetroStars and using the same soccer complex for their respective daily sessions ... MetroStars forward Clint Mathis has decided to postpone arthroscopic surgery on his left knee in order to participate in the U.S. national team camp that begins Feb. 23 in Ft. Lauderdale, with hopes of playing in the Feb. 28 World Cup qualifier against Mexico in Columbus. Miami Fusion Miami Fusion defender Tyrone Marshall and forward Andy Williams will re-join the Jamaica National Team this week for its World Cup qualifying match Feb. 28 when the "Reggae Boyz" host Trinidad & Tobago in its opening match of the final round of qualifying ... Defender Jeremy Aldrich was waived to put the Fusion within the 21-player roster limit required by Feb. 16 ... The Fusion held their first full 90-minute scrimmage of the preseason Feb. 16 at Patch Reef Park in Boca Raton ... Forward Diego Serna scored twice to lead the Gold squad to a 3-1 victory ... Midfielder Chris Henderson, acquired in the offseason, scored the game-winning goal in the first half ... Fusion rookie Greg Simmonds provided the lone goal for the Blue ... Fusion defender Leo Cullen, returning from a torn MCL, played 80 minutes in his first competitive action since suffering the injury on July 19, 2000. New England Revolution The New England Revolution beat Costa Rican second division powerhouse San Lorenzo F.C. 2-1 Feb. 16 in a closed door match at Heredia Stadium for the team's second victory in three matches ... Jamaican international Wolde Harris opened the scoring for the visiting team in the 5th minute, for his second goal of the tour and defender Brian Dunseth gave the Revs the winning goal in the 50th minute ... The Revs opened the team's third week in sunny Costa Rica yesterday with an early morning session at the PIPASA practice facility located in the town of Belen just 30 minutes away from the capital, San JosT ... The Revolution will begin the busiest stage of the team's Costa Rican preseason tour on Feb. 21, when they take on Mauricio Wright's ex-club Deportivo Saprissa at Saprissa Stadium ... The Revs will then take on the Costa Rica national team in a closed door match at Ricardo Saprissa Stadium on Feb. 23 ... The team departs for Guapiles, a town located two hours away from San JosT on Feb. 24 to take on first division club Santos de Guapiles on Feb. 25 ... Fernando Clavijo's squad will return to San JosT on Feb. 27 to battle Deportivo Heredia at Heredia Stadium in the team's last match of the 21-day tour ... New England now has a full compliment of roster players as captain John Harkes and Eric Wynalda have joined the team. Chicago Fire The Chicago Fire defeated the Tampa Bay Mutiny 1-0 Feb. 17 at the Shimburg Park Soccer Complex in Tampa, downing their Central Division rival for the second time in two days in the team's fourth preseason exhibition match ... The back-to-back victory against the Mutiny gives the 2000 U.S. Open Cup champs their third consecutive win in preseason action ... Fire midfielder Yuri Lavrinenko tallied the team's lone goal in the 54th minute after receiving passes from forward Seth George and 2000 MLS Rookie of the Year Carlos Bocanegra ... Led by Fire captain Peter Nowak, the Fire defeated Tampa Bay, 5-0, Feb. 15, as the Polish virtuoso registered six points on two goals - including a PK in the 1st minute - and two assists in the match ... After a brief return to Chicago, the Fire fly back to Ft. Lauderdale today to begin the second leg of preseason training camp continuing through March 6 ... Forward Dema Kovalenko continues to rehab a torn left hamstring muscle tendon, but is still restricted from running for 3 to 4 weeks. Columbus Crew The Columbus Crew are spending 12 days in Bavaria, while working out in the facilities of FC Nuremberg on Columbus' first preseason overseas tour ... The Crew kicked off play Feb. 17 with a 3-2 loss to FC Schweinfurt ... Crew Head Coach Tom Fitzgerald emptied the bench during the game, giving the entire roster playing time, as well as a few guys who are trying out for the team ... Schweinfurt started with their top 11 on the field, and were content to sit back and let the Crew play a bit of possession soccer ... Midfielder Robert Warzycha tallied in the 40th minute and midfielder Todd Yeagley netted the Crew's final goal in the 73rd minute ... Playing their second game on foreign soil in a 24-hour span, the Crew fell to TSV 1860 Munich by a 1-0 score on Feb. 18 ... It took just four minutes for Munich to strike, swerving a fourth minute corner kick into traffic, where it was controlled and sent into the box ... Crew goalkeeper Tom Presthus stepped up, but a Munich attacker headed the ball across the goalmouth and over Presthus ... Crew midfielder Brian Maisonneuve sustained a blow to the head on the play and had to leave the game ... Columbus held two practices Feb. 19 to prepare for a Feb. 20 game against SpVgg Weiden at Weiden Stadium. Dallas Burn Dallas Burn forward Jason Kreis underwent arthroscopic surgery Feb. 16 to repair torn cartilage in his right knee and his recovery time is expected to be 3-6 weeks ... Dallas waived defender Steve Bernal and midfielder Gary DePalma ... Bernal was a third round selection in the 2000 MLS SuperDraft and had not seen game action with the Burn, while DePalma was a fifth round selection in this year's SuperDraft ... Dallas arrived in Guadalajara, Mexico Feb. 16 and spent the weekend training ... The Burn beat Tapatillo, the second division squad for Chivas of Guadalajara, 1-0, Feb. 20, on a goal by Ariel Graziani ... On Feb. 22, Dallas will square off against the U-20 Mexican national team before ending the week with a Feb. 24 match against the San Jose Earthquakes ... Forward Aleksey Korol, who suffered a hamstring injury last week in training, is expected to join the team in Mexico this week ... Defender Josue Mayard, who has been finalizing some visa issues, is also expected to join the team in Mexico this week ... Sixteen-year-old Eddie Johnson is currently training with the U.S. U-17 national team in Florida in preparation for the 2001 FIFA U-17 World Youth Championship qualifiers in April ... Former Burn midfielder Brian Haynes accompanied the team to Mexico and will file a daily training camp report that will be posted on dallasburn.com. Tampa Bay Mutiny The Mutiny resumed training Feb. 20 after two days off, following two exhibition games in three days versus the Chicago Fire ... Tampa Bay lost at The Soccer Academy in Bradenton, 5-0, utilizing a mostly-reserve lineup defensively, but looked much more organized and solid in a 1-0 loss in Tampa. What could be the Mutiny's starting defensive back line (Chad McCarty, first round SuperDraft pick Craig Demmin, Joe Addo, Ritchie Kotschau) held the Fire scoreless in the first half. A Yuri Lavrinenko 54th minute score was the lone goal of that match ... the Mutiny will embark on a quick five-day training trip to Colombia Feb. 21-26 ... The Mutiny will meet First Division side Millonarios on Feb. 21, a match where Carlos Valderrama will suit up for one half for the Mutiny and one half for Millonarios, a squad he played for in 1984 ... Tampa Bay will meet Soacha F.C., a Second Division side, on Feb. 23 before returning to Tampa on Feb. 26. ... Tampa Bay midfielder Eric Quill had right ankle exploratory arthroscopy Feb. 19 at Memorial Hospital ... The surgery is expected to sideline Quill for at least 10 days before he begins rehabilitation and he should be ready for MLS Spring Training 2001 ...Quill originally injured the ankle in the late stages of the Mutiny's 2000 regular season finale Sept. 9 against Kansas City ... The Mutiny currently have three players in the recovery stages of surgery -- Kevin Anderson and Josh Keller (adductor surgery) and Quill ... Keller has begun running and participating in ball drills with the team, and Anderson has started light jogging and is about four weeks away from ball drills ... Quill, Anderson and Keller will miss the Mutiny's training trip to Colombia. Colorado Rapids The Colorado Rapids departed Feb. 17 for a two-week training stint in Portugal ... The Rapids defeated the Benfica Reserves of Portugal, 3-0, in an exhibition match held in Lisbon, Portugal ... Colorado received second-half goals from Junior Agogo, Ross Paule, and Wes Hart to lead the team to a victory over the second division squad ... The Rapids have exhibitions scheduled versus Belenenses (Feb. 24), Sporting Lisbon (Feb. 27), Estoril (Feb. 28), and Orientale (March 1) ... Colorado will also face the U.S. U-17 national team on Feb. 24 ... The trip to Portugal provides new head coach Tim Hankinson the opportunity to observe the team in competitive match-play for the first time ... Several guest players will join the Rapids in Portugal to provide more depth on the team ... One name that will be missing from among the Rapids lineup is defender Marcelo Balboa who will remain behind in Denver to finish rehabilitation from a previous abdominal surgery ... Balboa should be ready for MLS Spring Training in Fort Lauderdale, Florida beginning March 12. Kansas City Wizards The Kansas City Wizards arrived into Lisbon, Portugal late last week and have been training twice a day since ... Head Coach Bob Gansler's consistent method throughout his coaching career continues to ring true in Portugal ... The morning practice consists of physical training, combining technical work ... The afternoon practice consists of playing soccer with tactical area stressed, like positioning and changing the point of attack ... According to the coaching staff, every player looks sharp, while defender Nick Garcia and forward Roy Lassiter have really stood out ... Rookie midfielder Narciso Fernandes (5th round draft pick) has also caught the eye of the Wizards coaches thus far ... The Wizards beat F.C. Rio Major in their first exhibition Feb. 20, 1-0, on a goal by Mo Johnston ... The Wizards schedule in Portugal continues Feb. 22 vs. S.C. Caldas, Feb. 25 vs. South Korean Club Champion, Feb. 27 vs. F.C. Belenenses and March 1 vs. Benfica ... Jose Burciaga Jr., the Wizards #1 SuperDraft selection, is with the U-20 national team ... 2000 BIC Defender of the Year Peter Vermes is resting at home after undergoing surgery for appendicitis on Feb. 12 ... He did not make the trip to Portugal, but will be cleared to lightly train this week and is expected to go to Ft. Lauderdale with the team for the second leg of Spring Training on March 10. Los Angeles Galaxy The Los Angeles Galaxy are traveling to the Far East for a 10-day, three-match exhibition tour that began Feb. 17 and runs through Feb. 26 ... The Galaxy will play the China national team Feb. 21, in Kung Ming City ... L.A. will travel to Tokyo and play a closed-door match at Olympic Stadium against Verdy Kawasaki Feb. 23 ... The 1996 Emperor's Cup champion finished the 2000 season in 10th place in the J-League's 16-team first division with a 12-14-4 record ... The schedule concludes two days later when the Galaxy meets Urawa, of the J-League's first division, on Feb. 25 ... The Red Diamonds, who outscored their opponents 82-40 in 2000, were runner-up in the J-League's second division last season at 28-9-3 ... Known for their tremendous fan support, the team's season ticket fan base (18,000) outnumbers the population of Urawa (17,000) ... Rookie Mike Potempa suffered a strained left quadricep in training Feb. 16 and will be out for two to three weeks ... Veteran defender Robin Fraser and midfielder Danny Pena continue to rehab from left shoulder surgery and right knee surgery respectively and should rejoin the club at training by late February or early March. San Jose Earthquakes The San Jose Earthquakes departed Feb. 18 for their 2001 International Training Camp in Mexico ... While in Mexico, the 'Quakes will take on Atlas, Chivas, and Tecos of the Mexican First Division, as well as MLS Central Division rivals, the Dallas Burn ... The team's first match is Feb. 21, when the Earthquakes take on Atlas' 2nd team (Bachilleres) ... On Feb. 24, San Jose will play the Dallas Burn at Villa Primavera ... On Feb. 26, the Earthquakes will play Tecos 1st team, site TBD ... On Feb. 27, San Jose faces Atlas 1st Team at Atlas and wrap up the tour vs. Chivas 1st team at Chivas, date TBD...On non-match days, the team will train twice a day at the University of Guadalajara's Villa Primavera ... Five Earthquakes roster players did not travel to Mexico ... Defender Jeff Agoos continues to train with the U.S. national team in anticipation of the World Cup Qualifying match on Feb. 28, Jon Conway had surgery yesterday to repair his torn left MCL, an injury incurred during training ... Conway is expected to return at the beginning of the season ... Both defender Jamie Clark and midfielder Wojtek Krakowiak are recovering from surgery to repair athletic hernias, and should be available for MLS Spring Training in March.
