WUSA: San Diego adds tryout players

San Diego Spirit coach Carlos Juarez has added three players from local tryouts -- defender Rhiannon Tanaka, goalkeeper Melissa Moore and midfielder Michelle Maitland -- to his roster. Juarez chose the three from the 20 players who participated in the invitation-only tryout at the ARCO Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, Calif, Feb. 9-12. The Spirit now has 27 players on the preseason roster for training camp that opens on March 1. Each team can carry up to 28 players in preseason until March 18, when teams have to cut their rosters down to at most 24 players each. Tanaka is a rarity in that she is a former All-American at both USC and UCLA. She played her freshman year for the Trojans before transferring to Westwood, where she played two seasons for the Bruins. The Hungtington Beach, Calif., product was a two-time All-Pac-10 selection. She trained with the U.S. national team in 1995 and 1996. Moore was a four-year starter at New Mexico and gives the Spirit three goalkeepers -- along with Sweden's Ulrika Karlsson and former George Mason star Jaime Pagliarulo -- for preseason. Formerly Melissa Liston, Moore is also a Southern California product from La Verne. She trained with the U.S. national team in 1996. Maitland is a skillful midfielder from Placentia, Calif., who helped Cal Poly Pomona to the NCAA Division II championship game in 1999. She played for Juarez when he coached the Broncos and finished her career in Pomona last fall. Juarez on Tanaka "Rhi is a well-rounded player and an excellent one-on-one defender who is very smart about winning the ball. She is very technical and can get forward into the attack. If she was healthy for the first combine, she would have been drafted in the earlier rounds." Juarez on Moore "Melissa balances our goalkeeping group. She is very athletic and very capable of playing in the WUSA. She's brave and tenacious in the goal and will give our other two goalkeepers some great competition." Juarez on Maitland "Michelle is very technical and an offensive player. She is a great passer of the ball and her strength is in providing the forwards with good scoring opportunities."
