MLS: Dougherty leaves Rapids

Colorado Rapids midfielder Paul Dougherty is leaving Major League Soccer to return to his home in San Diego. Dougherty was originally acquired in a March 16, 2000 trade with the New England Revolution. Dougherty, 34, played one season for the Rapids, appearing in 24 games, recording three assists in a midfield that was decimated by injuries. Dougherty is a 10-year veteran of numerous soccer leagues, outdoors and indoors. He appeared in a total of 19 games in 1999, beginning with the Tampa Bay Mutiny, before a mid-season trade to Chicago. Splitting the 1998 season between the MetroStars and the Mutiny, he has also played in the A-League, ASL, CISL, NPSL, MISL and MSL.
