France, though even that's in doubt nowa serious shot at winning the World Cup. Nevertheless, Switzerland's solid 2-0 victory over Togo puts it within touching distance of a place in the next round;
all it needs is a point to move on in its final game against South Korea. The Swiss did an efficient job of attacking the Togolese with speed up and down the flanks, causing both of their goals.
Advancement to the second roundand perhaps even a move to the quarterfinals and beyondwould be a huge boost for Swiss soccer, which to date doesn't have much history to look back on. Switzerland's
best results at the World Cup were quarterfinal appearances in 1934, 1938 and 1954; the last time the team qualified for the second round was in the United States in 1994. The team has failed to
qualify for the World Cup since then. If the Swiss do well in this tournament, they'll carry that confidence with them into the European Championship, which the country is co-hosting in 2008 with
Austria.
