MLS: Alfonso Mondelo Is New MetroStars Coach

After two years of thinking global, the MetroStars have decided to go local. Sort of. Alfonso Mondelo, former head coach of the Long Island Rough Riders, will take over the post vacated by Carlos Alberto Parreira, who replaced Carlos Queiroz, who took over for Eddie Firmani. Mondelo, 39, is a native of Bilbao, Spain. He joins the MetroStars after four years at the helm of the A-League's Rough Riders, with whom he won four straight North Atlantic Division titles and the 1995 USISL Pro League title. He also coached the national team of Puerto Rico through the qualifying stages of the 1994 World Cup. "I look forward to being able contribute to the growth of the organization,'' said Mondelo of a team that finished at 13-19 last year and in last place of the Eastern Conference. ``Hopefully, I can help turn the fortunes of this team around and bring them into the forefront of American soccer."
