U.S. SOCCER: U-21s open Nordic Cup vs. Swiss

The U.S. under-21 women's national team defends its 1999 Nordic Cup championship when it opens 2000 Nordic Cup play against Switzerland on July 28. U.S. coach Jillian Ellis brings 18 players to her first Nordic Cup. Ellis, the women's coach at UCLA, included Olympic hopeful Christie Welsh and just one overage player, former Portland star Michelle French. The Nordic Cup, the unofficial world championship for the U-21 age group, allows each team to bring two overage players. In last year's tournament, which was held in Iceland, the USA defeated Norway, 2-1, in the final. The United States also won the Nordic Cup in 1993 and 1997. The tournament consists of two groups of four. The group winners play for the championship. The rest of the teams will play for third through eighth place. The United States is in Group B with Switzerland, Sweden and Finland. U.S. Under-21 Roster
