2. EUROPE: Rooney captains United to victory

Manchester United and Lyon maintained their perfect starts to the UEFA Champions League with their third straight wins on Tuesday.

Manchester United leads Group F after a 3-0 victory over FC Copenhagen at Old Trafford. Paul Scholes, John O'Shea and Kieran Richardson scored for United in a match notable for 20-year-old Wayne Rooney's debut as United captain. United manager Sir Alex Ferguson turned to Rooney with captain Gary Neville injured and Ryan Giggs and Rio Ferdinand both belatedly pulled from the starting lineup.

Lyon won, 3-0, at Dynamo Kiev in freezing conditions on goals by Juninho, Kim Kallstrom and Florent Malouda. Hapless Kiev tied a Champions League record for giving up three or more goals in four successive matches.

Real Madrid, Celtic, CSKA Moscow and AC Milan all won to move a step nearer the knockout phase.

In Real Madrid's 4-1 at Steaua Bucharest, David Beckham came off the bench to make his 100th Champions League appearance. Teammates Raul, who was making his 104th appearance, and Roberto Carlos, making his 102nd, are the only other players to have played 100 or more Champions League games.

CSKA Moscow moved into first place in Group G, one point ahead of of Arsenal, with a 1-0 win over the Gunners in Moscow. Brazilian Daniel Carvalho scored for CSKA, but three other goals were disallowed -- one for CSKA and two for Arsenal.
