Q&A with the SA Editors: Dec. 15, 1999

Omar Salem Morton Grove, Ill. I was just wondering how is the 2000 MLS All-Star game going to be played now that there are three separate divisions. Are they going to go back to the USA vs. World, or are they going to do 2 against 1 or, use the original Eastern and Western divisions? Ridge Mahoney: An excellent question, Omar. The format has yet to be decided. Here are a few of the proposals: 1. Use the Western and Eastern teams as it did the first four seasons, and simply name them something else: Red vs. Blue, Nike vs. the World, Yahoo vs. Aquafina, Frick vs. Frack. 2. Form an MLS all-star team to play a top foreign team. 3. Follow a format once used by the NHL. When it was a six-team league, the NHL champion would play the all-stars from the other teams. 4. Revive the format of U.S. players versus the foreigners. 5. Married players against singles. 6. Shirts vs. skins, chosen by team captains. As you can tell, they are listed in descending order of seriousness.
