World Cup 2002: CONCACAF Qualifying System

World Cup 2002 qualifying will be conducted in a fashion similar to the one used for the 1998 World Cup. System 1. Twelve semifinalists will be divided into three groups of four. After each team plays the other three teams in its group in home-and-home series, the top two in each group will move into the final round of qualifying. 2. The six finalists will play each other in home-and-home series, a total of 10 games. The top three teams will advance to the 2002 World Cup finals in Japan and South Korea. Teams Four semifinalists: The United States, Mexico, Jamaica and Costa Rica, CONCACAF finalists in the last three World Cups, advance automatically to the semifinals. Two semifinalists: The six remaining Central American teams will be divided into two groups of three. After each team plays the other two teams in its group in home-and-home series, the top team in each group will move into the semifinals. The runner-up will move into the interzone playoffs. ò Teams will be drawn out of the following pots to determine the two three-team groups: Pot A: Honduras and El Salvador. Pot B: Guatemala and Panama. Pot C: Belize and Nicaragua. Three semifinalists: The 24 Caribbean teams will be divided into 12 pairings. The winners of the 12 home-and-home series will meet second home-and-home series. Those six winners meet in third home-and-home series, and the three winners move into the semifinals. The three losers of the home-and-home series will move into the interzone playoffs ò Here are the pairings for the first home-and-home series: Cuba vs. Caribbean 1 Caribbean 2 vs. Caribbean 3 Caribbean 4 vs. Caribbean 5 Caribbean 6 vs. Caribbean 7 St. Vincent & Grenadines vs. Caribbean 8 Caribbean 9 vs. Caribbean 10 Caribbean 11 vs. Caribbean 12 Caribbean 13 vs. Bermuda Trinidad & Tobago vs. Caribbean 14 Caribbean 15 vs. Caribbean 16 Caribbean 17 vs. Caribbean 18 Caribbean 19 vs. Bahamas The 19 teams in Pot D: Anguilla Antigua & Barbuda Aruba Barbados British Virgin Islands Cayman islands Dominica Dominican Republic Grenada Guyana Haiti Montserrat Netherlands Antilles Puerto Rico St. Kitts/Nevis St. Lucia Surinam Turks & Caicos U.S. Virgin Islands Three semifinals: Interzone playoffs -- Canada and the two Central American runners-up will meet the three losers of the third home-and-home series in the Caribbean. The three winners advance to the semifinals. Semifinal groups The draw for the semifinals will be held after the end of the first round of qualifying. The three seeds are Mexico (Group C), Jamaica (Group D) and the United States (Group E). The following are the three pots. One team from each pot will be placed in three groups. ò Here are the three pots: Pot E -- Costa Rica and the two Central American winners. Pot F -- The three Caribbean winners. Pot G -- The three Interzone playoff winners.
