Gomez-Moreno Connection Proves Lethal in NY

It was a fantastic goal: Christian Gomez ran with the ball into what appeared to be a crowded Red Bull defense before laying the ball off to veteran Jaime Moreno, who returned a lovely weighted pass into the only available space for Gomez to loft the ball delicately over Jeff Conway to give D.C. United a 1-0 win over the New York Red Bulls at Giants Stadium. The boys in black are now in a good position to move into the Eastern Conference finals when they take the Bulls in the return leg at home this weekend. The Washington Post says it was more than just a simple one-two between Moreno and Gomez that led to the game's only goal: It was more of a telepathic understanding developed by a Latin pair that's been working together for the last two years. Even Red Bull coach Bruce Arena was duly impressed: "They're the only two players in the league that could pull that off," he said. All week long Arena had stressed the importance of putting the stop on the Latin connection, but of course, it was the deadly pair that made the crucial breakthrough 13 minutes from time. "Jaime's got the skills to place the ball at the right spot at the right pace, and Gomez has the know-how to run in the right space and the composure to take the ball down and finish off the play," Arena said flatly. "Very nice goal." For New York, the story remains the same next week in the return leg at RFK: stop Moreno and Gomez. The goal was Gomez's fifth in his last five; United needs just a tie to advance to the final.
