In Italy's Serie A, the big guys are stumbling. Inter Milan, the favorite for this year's Scudetto, is managing good results without ever having looked like a champion, AS Roma looks at times
unbeatable and absolutely indifferent at others, and AC Milan can't score, while still needing to compensate for an 8-point match-fixing penalty. As a result, Palermo, the free-wheeling Sicilian side,
has assumed the top spot in Serie A. At this early stage, Roma captain Francesco Totti is unworried, insisting his team, currently third in the table, will lift itself after dropping five points from
its last two games. "We still believe we can win the title, because we have a team for the Scudetto," the 30-year old World Cup winner said. Things are more uneasy up north in Milan, where AC Milan
striker Alberto Gilardino blamed his poor form on an inability to play alongside fellow Italy striker Filippo Inzaghi. "It isn't easy for me to play next to Inzaghi, we are two lone strikers and we
often move in a similar way, ending up in the same position," he said. Gilardino hasn't scored for the Rossoneri for six months, for which he has received considerable criticism in the Italian media.
His form is almost as bad as that of Inter Milan striker Adriano, who has been sent home to Brazil after failing to score for Inter for 7 months. Adriano has returned to his homeland alone, which
suggests that the striker could be offloaded during the January transfer window. Tomorrow night, Roma plays host to Ascoli, AC Milan travels to Verona to play Chievo, and Inter Milan faces Livorno at
the San Siro.
