2. AMERICANS ABROAD: Enochs celebrates German Cup win; Friedel & Blackburn downed by Chelsea

GERMAN CUP. With American keeper Kasey Keller resting, German First Division club Borussia Monechengladbach was eliminated in the second round of the German Cup at Third Division VfL Osnabrueck, for whom Californian defensive midfielder Joe Enochs played the full 90 minutes in midfield in front of a sellout crowd of 18,500. The 35-year-old Enochs, who has earned one USA cap, has been has been with Osnabrueck since 1996. Two of his seasons were in the Second Division.

ENGLISH LEAGUE CUP. In Wednesday's action, Connecticut product Johann Smith, 19 , saw his first action in official competition for Bolton, which was eliminated in the third round with a 1-0 loss at fellow EPL club Bolton. The forward entered as 56th minute sub. Brad Friedel made seven saves but fell, 2-0, with Blackburn to Chelsea. Reading rested keeper Marcus Hahnemann and went out, 4-3, at Liverpool.
