Joe Bean, the winningest coach in college soccer history at any level, earned his 600th career win Wednesday night when Wheaton (Ill.) beat Carthage,
5-0, to secure a berth in the College Conference of
Illinois & Wisconsin Tournament.
Bean, who now has a career record of 600-183-59, has announced he will retire at the end of
the season.
"I have been blessed with talented players, wonderful facilities and resources through the years," he said. Of his 600-win milestone, he added, "Someone will break it, but it
is nice to be the first to do it."
Bean will be honored in a ceremony before Friday's match against Lake Forest. Wheaton will re-name the Thunder soccer facility (currently known as
East McCully Field) Bean Stadium.
