Juve Lawyer: We Probably Deserved Serie C

Juventus was fortunate not to be demoted to Serie C for its part in Calcipoli, according to Juve lawyer Cesare Zacarone. "Probably someone in this meeting doesn't understand the situation we were in," said the lawyer. "The dossier that was given to us included so many infractions made by Luciano Moggi and Antonio Giraudo, who were representing the club at the time." The Turin club held an extensive board meeting yesterday regarding the relegation of the team and its financial problems. Present were club President Cobolli Gigli, chief executive Jean-Claude Blanc, Zaccarone and certain minor shareholders. Zaccarone defended the board's decision to ask the tribunal for demotion to Serie B with no penalty. The shareholders, of course, wanted better than that. "Our situation was tragic, what could we do? We couldn't defend Moggi or Giraudo," Zaccarone said, adding that the team probably deserved demotion to Serie C. He said the team made the best decision given the circumstances. President Cobolli Gigli had little to say after the meeting, except, "I understand the shareholders, but we are trying our best to bring Juve back to the level we should be at." A final judgment for each of the convicted Calciopoli teams is expected to be handed down by the Italian Olympic Committee sports tribunal next week; they are all seeking reduced point penalties.
