MLS Preview: D.C. United at MetroStars (May 30)

Location: Giants Stadium

Kickoff: 7:30 p.m. (EST)

Television: ESPN2

Satellite: Galaxy 5, Tr. 14

Injuries: D.C. -- D Mike Huwiler (torn groin and abdominal muscles), and F Juan Berthy Suarez (sprained foot) are on injured reserve, D Clint Peay (bruised calf) and M Richie Williams (strained groin) are probable; MetroStars -- D Andrew Restrepo (sprained ankle) is questionable, D Matt Knowles (bruised shoulder) is probable.

Previous Meeting: MetroStars won 2-1 in a shootout at RFK Stadium May 12.

Preview: The Carlos Queiroz era begins this evening, but can the former Portuguese national team coach ignite a MetroStars team that is last in MLS in scoring (1.1 goals per game)? That will be a difficult task without top scorer Giovanni Savarese (8 goals -- the only MetroStar yet to score), who is with the Venezuelan national team for World Cup qualifying. Tab Ramos and Colombian Ruben Dario Hernandez must create opportunities, particularly in the second half, when United tends to struggle on the road.

Marco Etcheverry's knee, contrary to recent reports, is fine and he will start for Washington this evening. D.C. is still looking for its first road win of the season, but the team should be well-rested after a 12-day break, although John Harkes and Jeff Agoos both played in the U.S. national team's 2-1 win over Scotland. Midfielder Kris Kelderman returns to the lineup after missing several games with badly bruised ribs.

PROBABLE LINEUPS

D.C. United -- Causey, Imler, Pope, Peay, Agoos, Kelderman, Williams, Harkes, Etcheverry, Diaz Arce, Rammel.

MetroStars -- Meola, Zaun, Knowles, Caaricola, Gillen, Joseph, Kydes, Ramos, Vermes, Wood, Hernandez.

Prediction: The MetroStars finally get goals from someone besides Savarese, but United prevails 3-2.
