MLS: Mutiny trade Hattrup to Dallas

The Tampa Bay Mutiny has traded forward Peter Hattrup to the Dallas Burn, team GM Nick Sakiewicz announced today.

In return, the Mutiny receive Dallas' first pick (#6 overall) in the 1997 MLS Supplemental Draft, which will be held Feb. 2 in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., and a third-round pick in the 1998 MLS College Draft.

The Mutiny drafted Hattrup in the second round last year, but he never appeared in a regular season match, as he suffered a torn ACL before the season started.

The 32-year-old former APSL star returned to action as a guest player in Dallas' 3-2 exhibition win over El Salvador this past November.

Tampa now has a pair of first round picks in both the collegiate and supplemental drafts (they received New England's first-round pick in the collegiate draft, #2 overall, as compensation for the signing of former Mutiny coach Thomas Rongen).

"We have stocked up on draft choices because we feel there are players in both drafts that can help us," said Sakiewicz. "We are sorry to have to let Peter go, but we needed to free up some room under the salary cap for the acquisition of an international player which we hope will take place soon."
