The MetroStars shored up their defense by acquiring Mark Semioli from the Los Angeles Galaxy for a second-round pick in the 1998 MLS supplemental draft, the team announced June 16. Semioli, 29, was
a fifth-round pick of the Galaxy in the inaugural MLS draft and started 27 games for last year's league runner-up. He was a two-time all-America at Stanford, where he played with current MetroStars
defender Rhett Harty. The trade is expected to help the Galaxy clear salary and roster space to activate former U.S. international defender Paul Caligiuri. "Mark is an experienced defender who
played a big part in helping the Galaxy advance to the championship game a year ago," said MetroStars GM Charlie Stillitano. "Right now, we have a very young defense and we believe Mark can step in
and help immediately."
