FIFA to Introduce Goal-Line Technology at 2007 World Club Championship

FIFA will debut a new goal-line technology during next year's World Club Championship, Sepp Blatter, the organization's president, confirmed. Soccer's world governing body had planned on using the technology at this year's World Cup but later shelved those plans after a trial run at the Under-17 World Cup in Peru last year proved inconclusive. Blatter said the technology would be deployed at the Club Championship in Tokyo and then would later be added to "other FIFA competitions too," if it proved successful. Blatter did not specifically mention the World Cup. He also said that goal-line video equipment is the only technology FIFA would consider using to help referees. Many critics have called for the introduction of video technology to help match officials make offsides decisions. Instead, Blatter stressed the need to improve training for match officials. "Referees need to be professional and the linesmen must be specialists," he said. "The 2009 Confederations Cup will only use specialist linesmen."
