German great Franz Beckenbauer and former U.S. women's captain April Heinrichs head the list of '98 inductees into the National Soccer Hall of Fame. Beckenbauer, who captained West Germany to the
1974 World Cup title and coached it to the '90 title, starred in the North American Soccer League for the New York Cosmos (1977-80 and '83). Heinrichs was one of the original stars of the U.S.
national team, helping the team capture the inaugural Women's World Cup in 1991 as part of the famed "triple-edged sword" with Michelle Akers and Carin Jennings-Gabarra. Also elected for induction in
the meritorious service category are soccer administrators Peter Collins and Patrick Smith.
