Yugoslavian defender Slobodan Komljenovic scored his first international goal in the fourth minute to give Yugoslavia a 1-0 lead over the USA in their Group F qualifying match in Nantes. The U.S.
came out aggresively, and had a chance right away, as Frankie Hejduk lofted a ball from the right side in the first minute that went over the head of Yugoslav keeper Ivica Kralj but bounced off the
far post. In the fourth minute, Sinisa Mihajlovic took a free kick from several yards outside the left corner of the U.S. area. His driven kick swerved towards the far post, and American keeper
Brad Friedel did well to parry the ball to his left. Unfortunately, the ball headed to an unmarked Komljenovic at the far post, and his header from a narrow angle bounced into the goal before Friedel
could recover. The goal helps Yugoslavia in its quest to win Group F and face Mexico in the second round.
