Women's World Cup: Canada to host CONCACAF qualifying

Canada has been awarded the CONCACAF qualifying tournament for the 1999 FIFA Women's World Cup, and will stage the event in the Toronto, Ontario area from Aug. 28 to Sept. 6 Originally planned to take place in Haiti, the tournament had to be switched when disputes broke out between the Haiti Government and the Haitian Football Federation. "We are pleased and grateful that the Canadian Soccer Association has made itself available for this important event," said CONCACAF Secretary General Chuck Blazer. The winner of the qualifying group will qualify automatically for the 1999 FIFA Women's World Cup, to be staged in the United States from June 19 to July 10. The runner-up will play home and away matches with Argentina to decide the final Western Hemisphere place in the ultimate women's soccer event. The USA has already qualified as the host nation.
