U.S. Open Cup: Greek Americans forfeit

The N.Y. Greek Americans Atlas of the USASA have forfeited their first-round victory over the Western Mass. Pioneers of the D3 Pro League because the team fielded ineligible players. The Greek Americans appealed, but U.S. Soccer ruled that the amateurs would have to forfeit after a conference call on June 26. As a result, Western Mass. advances to the Second Round and will face the A-League's Rochester Rhinos on July 1. The $10,000 dollars previously awarded to the Greek Americans Atlas for being the amateur team to advance the farthest in the tournament will instead be split among all the amateur teams from the First Round. U.S. Soccer is currently finalizing dates and times for the U.S. Open Cup quarterfinals, semifinals and finals, which will all be played at neutral stadiums. Following the third round matches, when MLS clubs begin competing, the eight surviving teams will be grouped geographically, and then paired in a blind draw for the quarterfinals. The four quarterfinal matches will be played as two doubleheaders, with one in the East and one in the West. The semifinal match-ups will also be played as a doubleheader, with the four finalists being paired by a blind draw. The dates and times of all these matches will be announced by U.S. Soccer in the coming weeks. The 1998 U.S. Open Cup final has tentatively been scheduled for late August.
