Shell Caribbean Cup: Seven goals for Crew's John

Columbus Crew striker Stern John had seven goals in three games to lead Trinidad & Tobago into the semifinals of the 10th annual Shell Caribbean Cup. T&T hosts the semifinals and final July 29 and 31 in Port of Spain. It meets Haiti in one semifinal and World Cup finalist Jamaica, minus its English-based stars, plays surprise Antigua/Barbuda in the other semifinal. T&T got four goals from John and two each from New England's David Nakhid and Irasto Knights in an 8-0 win over Dominica July 26 to close out play in Group A with a perfect record. Knights had two goals and John added one in a 3-2 win over A-B to open play July 22. John had both T&T goals in a 2-1 win over French island Martinique two nights later. The Antiguans-Barbudans upset Martinique 5-1 in a wet Hasely Crawford Stadium in Port of Spain to earn a berth in the semifinals for the first time. Five different players scored for A-B: Ranja Christian, Derrick Edwards, Winston Roberts, Quentin Clarke and Garfield Gonsalves. Trinidadian referee Ramesh Ramdhan ejected Martiniquan goalkeeper Gilbert Coco for his foul on Edwards in the 30th minute. A-B had Clarke red-carded in the second half with the score 4-1 in its favor. Martinique was missing Rodolphe Rano, who scored four goals in its opening game against Dominica, and midfielder Patrick Percin, who were serving one-match suspensions following their dismissal against T&T, a game the local team won just 2-1. In Kingston, Jamaica edged Haiti 2-1 July 26 to capture the Group B title. Ian Goodison had his third goal of the tournament and U-23 star Oneil McDonald added a second goal. Haiti, who had two weeks to prepare for the tournament, got a late goal from Wilfrid Montilas. Both teams were already assured of qualifying for the semifinals at the expense of the Cayman islands and the Netherlands Antilles. The Reggae Boyz will be without popular Walter Boyd for the Antigua-Barbuda game. He got a red card for retaliation against Haiti.
