The USL1's Puerto Rico Islanders will look to qualify for the final round qualifying for the 2007 CONCACAF Champions Cup when they host Fruta Conquerors (Guyana), W Connection (Trinidad & Tobago) and
Hoppers FC (Antigua) Group C Dec. 8-14 at Juan Ramon Loubriel Stadium in Bayamon.
Among the new players the Islanders have signed for the regional club competition are former U.S. U-17
David Johnson, who comes from the Los Angeles Galaxy, defender
Jacobi Goodfellow and forward
Byron Alvarez from the USL1's Portland Timbers and
Leslie Fitzgerald, a Trinidad & Tobago national team player who played with the Atlanta
Silverbacks of the USL (2004) and Real Salt Lake of MLS (2005). Returning for the CONCACAF tournament only is
Corey Woolfolk, who played in 2006 with the
Vancouver Whitecaps. Also signed was
Yuri Morales, who represented the USA at the recent beach soccer world championships.
The Caribbean club
champion will progress to the 2007 CONCACAF Champions Cup and face the 2006 Mexican Torneo Apertura winner (Guadalajara or Toluca) in the quarterfinals.
