American players took it on the chin in the English Premier League.
Fulham, for which Brian McBride
played 71 minutes while Carlos Bocanegra
sat out injured, fell, 4-0, to
Liverpool. Claudio Reyna
played the first half before suffering from hamstring problems while DaMarcus Beasley
came on in the 76th minute as Manchester City lost its derby with
Manchester United, 3-1. It was Beasley's first appearance in more than a month and his fifth of the season. Jonathan Spector
made his 10th start of the season and played 61 minutes for
West Ham in a 4-0 loss to Bolton.
Two American goalkeepers came out on the losing end: Blackburn's Brad Friedel
(3-1 to Newcastle) and Everton's Tim Howard
Newcastle scored its third goal into an empty net after Friedel joined the attack in hopes for a late equalizer.
Two English Premier League newcomers, Reading and
Watford, settled for a scoreless tie. Keeper Marcus Hahnemann
went the full 90 for Reading while defender Jay DeMerit
played the whole game for host Watford, which has won just once and
sits in last place. Reading dropped one notch to seventh place.
In Germany, Borussia Moenchengladbach, with Kasey Keller
in goal, could muster only a 1-1 tie with last-place
Mainz. Gladbach is one spot above the relegation zone, ahead of third-to-last Bochum on goal difference. Second-to-last place Hamburg SV played to a scoreless tie with Nuremberg as Benny
remained on Hamburg's bench. Steve Cherundolo
went the full 90 at right back as his Hannover 96 tied Arminia Bielefeld, 1-1, and stretched its undefeated run to four games.
Hannover had started the season with only one win in 10 games but is now in 11th place.
