It didn't take FC Dallas as long as the U.S. Soccer to replace its departed coach, though Colin Clarke's replacement at FCD assumes the job under similar circumstances. For the undecided, the
interim-coach has become the choice du jour in American soccer, and Steve Morrow, a former defender from the days when the club was known as the Dallas Burn, is the latest beneficiary/ potential
victim. Like Gulati's search for the next manager U.S., FCD general manager Michael Hitchcock started out with a long list of 50 candidates, but was unable to come to a satisfactory decision. Morrow's
first move was to distance himself from the Clarke administration, under which he was assistant coach. "Colin and I are very, very different coaches," said Morrow, adding, "I want to be judged on my
own right as a coach." Morrow, like Clarke, a former Northern Ireland international, was chosen ahead of D.C. United assistant Tom Soehn, former USA international Jeff Agoos and SMU coach Schellas
Hyndman. Dallas has grown in strength over the last few years, though this season the club underachieved when it really mattered, faltering at home against the Colorado Rapids in the first round of
the playoffs and eventually losing on penalties. Last season produced some positives, however: FCD topped the Western Conference with a 16-12-4 record, but Hitchcock felt that failing in the first
round of the postseason for the second straight year was a signal that it was time for a change.
