The Year's Best Chants

  • BBC Sport, Wednesday, December 20, 2006 4:14 PM
This is kind of fun and to a certain extent, holiday-oriented: BBC Sport has published a list of the English Premiership 10 best new chants of 2006, including two that go to the tune of "Winter Wonderland." They come from Wigan Athletic and Manchester United, respectively: "There's only one Emile Heskey, one Emile Heskey, he used to be s***e, but now he's all right, walkin' in a Heskey wonderland." And: "Mourinho are you listening, you'd better keep our trophy glistening, coz we'll be back in May to take it away, walking in a Fergie Wonderland!" Another (considerably more offensive) chant that Sittingbourne fans sing to their local rivals from Chatham goes to the tune of Verdi's 'La Donna e Mobile.' It refers to a scandal involving one of Chatham's players: "All bling and Burberry, high teenage pregnancy, no father on the scene, all robbing cash machines!" For those who know the tune to the famous chant Arsenal used to sing to former midfielder Patrick Vieira, Portsmouth fans sing the following to striker Benjani Mwerawari: "Ben-jani, who-ah-whoh whoh...he comes from Zimbabwe, he'll score eventually." And finally, Liverpool fans sing, "Put your hands up for Dirk Kuyt-he loves this city!" to the tune of 'Put Your Hands Up for Detroit.'
