MLS: Costa Rican Roy Myers allocated to MetroStars

The MetroStars have acquired Costa Rican international midfielder Roy Myers, team vice president and general manager Charlie Stillitano announced Feb. 24. Myers, 29, has made 35 full international appearances for his national team and made his World Cup debut in Italy in 1990 as a 19-year-old under current MetroStars Head Coach Bora Milutinovic. Costa Rica made a splash by advancing to the second round in a group that also included Brazil, Sweden and Scotland. A native of Limon, Myers has over 13 years of first division soccer experience in Costa Rica, Uruguay and Mexico. He made his professional debut as a 17-year-old for his hometown club, Deportiva Limonense. "We're delighted to add a skillful and experienced professional like Roy Myers to the club," Stillitano said. "This is a player that should fit in well with the type of team Bora is working to assemble." After Limonense, Myers moved on to play for Penarol in Uruguay before spending six years in the Mexican League with Pachuca. Most recently Myers played for Deportivo Saprissa in Costa Rica. "Bora was a great influence on the transfer," Myers said from Costa Rica. "We are old friends. He knows how I play, and I know how he works." Myers will arrive in New York in time to travel with the team when it departs for a 10-day training tour of Italy March 2.
