U.S. national team midfielder Frankie Hejduk has been named to Bundesliga club Bayer Leverkusen's 20-player squad for its Jan. 11-22 tour of South America. Hejduk was originally set to train in
Florida with Leverkusen's reserves during January, but ended up being selected to the first team and traveling to South America. The Leverkusen first team will train in Sao Paulo, Brazil, and play
matches against Brazilian clubs Sao Paulo and Flamengo. After impressing Leverkusen scouts during the '98 World Cup, the 24-year old Hejduk signed a contract and moved to the German club in October
'98. Since his arrival, he has been a fixture in the club's reserve team lineup while acclimating to the German lifestyle. Just before the German winter break, Hejduk was placed on the team's active
roster for a match on Dec. 19 against Hansa Rostock, but did not see any action. Hejduk's inclusion in head coach Christoph Daum's first team roster signals that he could finally earn his first team
debut when the Bundesliga season resumes in February.
