MLS: Project-40 Squad Completes Five-Match Sweep of England

U.S. Pro-40 earned its fifth consecutive win on Dec. 19 with a 2-1 victory against the reserves from Sheffield United at the Manchester United Training Grounds. The victory marked a five-game international winning streak for the young Americans as they shut down all five of their English Premier and First Division reserve team opponents, outscoring them 10-2. U.S. Pro-40 midfielder Steve Jolley (Los Angeles Galaxy) and defender Scott Vermillion (Kansas City Wizards) scored the club's final goals of the English tour. Jolley, who finished the tour as the team's leading goal scorer with four goals (three of which were gamewinners), opened the scoring in the 32nd minute on a pass from forward Tony Kuhn (Chicago Fire). Sheffield closed in to even the match in the dying seconds of the first half with a goal from forward Lee Morris. Vermillion, one of three University of Virginia products in Project-40, scored the gamewinner in the 50th minute to insure the clean sweep of England. Goalkeepers Matt Napoleon (Miami Fusion) and Matt Jordan (Dallas Burn) split time in the nets against Sheffield United, recording a total of six saves. Both Napoleon and Jordan registered a 0.40 goals against average. Many of the U.S. Pro-40 players will report to U.S. U-23 and U-20 national team camps at the ARCO Training Center in San Diego following the New Year. The U-23s report to camp from January 5-17 and the U-20s are slated to train from January 4-20. The teams have tentatively scheduled scrimmages against each other and clubs from the surrounding area.
