College: Lynn Downs Sonoma State For Women's Division II Title

Before a home crowd of 1,260, Lynn University downed Sonoma State 3-1 Dec. 6 in Boca Raton, Fla. to win the school's first-ever women's Division II soccer championship. Senior Keri Lief, who was sidelined with a knee injury when the Knights were eliminated in the 1997 semifinals, scored Lynn's first goal and assisted on the gamewinner. Sonoma State took the early lead in the 6th minute, when Amy Apodoca headed Susie Burke's corner kick. The Cossacks' score was the first goal allowed by Lynn in the tournament. But the Knights rallied in the half's final minute, when tournament Defensive MVP Adele Talamo passed Marie Kolbert's corner kick to Lief, who headed the ball home for her first goal of the season. "[Lynn coach] Rocky [Orezzoli] told me yesterday that he had a dream that I scored on a header," said Lief. "He should have told me that all year." Freshman Sue Sheehan scored the gamewinner 14 minutes after the break on a header from Lief's cross, and tournament Offensive MVP Katie Katzmark iced the match with an 84th-minute strike. Lynn reached the title game by throttling top-ranked Franklin Pierce 4-0 in a match that saw both teams lose their top scorers (Lynn's Jannie Nicolaisen and Franklin Pierce's Pauliina Miettinen) to injury in the opening fifteen minutes. Sonoma State downed Ashland 5-2, as Stacy Barker scored twice and Sarah Brosius added three assists. SEMIFINALS Dec. 4 in Boca Raton, Fla. Sonoma State 5 Ashland 2.
