Spector plays role in Hammers' Old Trafford triumph

[U.S. ABROAD] Jonathan Spector came off the bench in the 26th minute for injured George McCartney and helped West Ham United upset his old club, Manchester United, 1-0, at Old Trafford on Sunday. The Hammers' win cap a late-season comeback to remain in the English Premier League.

Clint Dempsey made his first start for Fulham in a 3-1 loss to Middlesbrough. The Cottagers' three Americans -- Carlos Bocanegra, Brian McBride and Dempsey -- all went the entire 90 minutes in the loss that dropped Fulham to 16th place, only one point above the drop zone.

Loan players Oguchi Onyewu and DaMarcus Beasley may have played their last games in the EPL. Onyewu came on as a sub in Newcastle's 1-1 tie at Watford, while Beasley went 81 minutes in Manchester City's 2-1 loss at Tottenham.

Tim Howard was in goal for Everton's 1-1 tie at Chelsea that clinched a berth in the UEFA Cup next season.

Michael Bradley will return to the UEFA Cup next season with Heerenveen. Its bid for a spot in the UEFA Champions League ended when it lost to Ajax, 4-0, and 4-1, on aggregate in the semifinal stage of the Netherlands' playoff series for its second Champions League spot. Bradley, who is expected to play a key role for the USA at the Under-20 World Cup, played the last 15 minutes for Heerenveen.

In Mexico, Edgar Castillo came on in the second half of Santos' 1-1 tie at Pachuca in the second leg of their Torneo Clausura quarterfinal series. The series ended, 2-2, and Pachuca went through on the basis of its better record in the regular season.
