Rumors Swirl Over Reds Ahead CL Final

If the British press wants to see Liverpool win Wednesday's Champions League final (and you suspect that most would), it's certainly not done the Reds any favors with the endless speculation about who's going where in the offseason. Talk all you want about Man United, Carlos Tevez, Jose Mourinho and any of the other countless EPL rumors, but to insinuate that Rafa Benitez has already planned a clear-out before one of the most important matches in Liverpool and, indeed, English soccer history, can do nothing but harm to Liverpool's chances of winning.

Reports of a Liverpool fire-sale culminated in the speculation that Barcelona striker Samuel Eto'o, rumored to be unhappy with life at the Spanish champion, is top of Benitez's shopping list. The Cameroon striker on Wednesday flatly denied the rumors, saying, "I am happy here," he said. "There have been so many lies written about me," he claimed. "In fact, I would say that 99.999% of the things I have read about myself in the papers have been untrue."

Meanwhile, can you imagine being Peter Crouch, Craig Bellamy or Xabi Alonso, reading about how you may be losing your job next season before the most important match of your life? Conjecture may be the British tabloid way, but you'd think they'd be willing to back off ahead of the Champions League final.
