Luca Toni is set to become one of the more high-profile players to move this summer, as Fiorentina, his employer for the last two seasons, told the striker he was free to leave. The release is understood to be the wish of the player. Toni, 30, is already being linked with a move to Bayern Munich, which is a little curious considering that the German giant failed to qualify for the Champions League next season.

"Thanking him for the contribution he has made to the team in the last two seasons with 49 goals, the president has considered it necessary to give into the wish of the forward to further his career at another club," Viola President Diego Della Valle said in a statement on the club's Web site. "Giampaolo Pazzini and Adrian Mutu will represent Fiorentina's attacking duo for many years to come. We will bring some reinforcements but we are already competitive."

Rumor has it that Toni has already agreed to a two-year deal with the Munich club. "We have targeted the Fiorentina striker because he is a guarantee of goals, has character and always helps the team," Bayern President Franz Beckenbauer said. "He is a special type of guy. I really hope that he will come."
