Lalas Blazes MLS PR Trail

L.A. Galaxy President Alexi Lalas is certainly doing his part: less than a month before David Beckham's arrival, Lalas is everywhere, doing his best to feed the hype. In an interview with The Sun, Lalas moves away from the Premiership "delusion," focusing instead on the merits of MLS. "I challenge anybody that says a player can't come to the MLS and continue to compete at the highest level. I don't buy this mentality that coming here is stepping down," he says, adding that Beckham will see for himself. He will no doubt be asked to compare MLS to the Premiership and other leagues over and over again. You can bet he'll come up with some painfully neutral, uncontroversial answer by the way.

Lalas, meanwhile, is defiant in his quest to gain MLS some respect: "There are people in other countries who worship an inferior product to this league. We measure up to -- and often surpass -- what's on offer in most leagues in the world." He adds: "You cannot argue that this league is not the most competitive in the world because we do have incredible parity. We don't have the haves and the have-nots like the top four in England." A good point, although it would be very hard indeed for MLS to match the heart-attack finale in La Liga this season.
