Real to Decide on Capello Next Week

All kinds of interesting Real Madrid tidbits have been revealed in the days since the Merengues' lifted the Spanish League title. First, came the allegation that Real had signed an illegal contract with Getafe coach Bernd Schuster, the man who President Ramon Calderon wanted to see installed as coach when he became president last year. In February, there were whisperings that Schuster had indeed signed a contract, though Calderon denies the claim saying, "We cannot talk to anyone who has a contract, but if we need a coach and Schuster becomes available, then I imagine [sporting director Pedrag] Mijatovic will look at him."

One thing's for sure: despite winning La Liga and having two years left on his contract, Real coach Fabio Capello's job is far from certain. Calderon confirmed that the club had spoken with the following coaches: Michael Laudrup, Ronald Koeman, Arsenal's Arsene Wenger and Schuster. Calderon said: "We are waiting on the report from the club's sporting department," which is headed by Mijatovic. "They will make recommendations as to whether Capello should continue as coach. We will decide on Monday or Tuesday."

It looks like the sporting director will have the final say: "Mijatovic has never been questioned," Calderon said, adding that it was the former Real star's decision to keep Capello after Calderon was hired in the first place. Asked whether Capello had achieved his objectives, Calderon replied: "The objective we asked of him [La Liga title] is the one he delivered."
