D.C. United beat America, 1-0, Sunday on a Rod Dyachenko goal and is tied
for first place in Group B with Houston, which scored from the opening kickoff against Morelia yet conceded a pub-league equalizer and ended up tied, 1-1.
Guadalajara took over the lead
in Group A by beating the Galaxy, 2-1, in front of more than 37,000 fans at the Los Angeles Coliseum. FC Dallas played its second straight 1-1 tie, against Pachuca, and despite being in third place
can advance if it beats the Galaxy at home Tuesday night. GROUP A.
The Galaxy didn't have David
and Guadalajara did have its six national-team and under-20 players who had sat out the first SuperLiga game Saturday night.
Not surprisingly, Guadalajara overpowered the Galaxy,
2-1. Francisco Rodriguez
and Omar Bravo
scored as Guadalajara dominated most of the play, relaxing only in the final
minutes and allowing Landon Donovan
to scoot free and score. Omar Arellano
flubbed a sitter, Joe Cannon
flew skywards to tip away a Ramon Morales
free kick, and a last-ditch tackle by Troy Roberts
diverted a Sergio Santana
shot wide of the target in a first half Guadalajara controlled without scoring.
tallied in the 59th minute on an Omar Esparza
cross from a short corner kick. The Galaxy roused its attack to produce a Pete
shot that was saved and a Carlos Pavon
header over the crossbar.
Morales's cross sent Bravo clear to score the clincher and
Donovan's alert capture of an errant back pass yielded the consolation goal.
FC Dallas lost an apparently good goal to an offside decision and complained strenuously to the penalty kick
that enabled Pachuca to come away from Pizza Hut Park with a 1-1 tie. Carlos Ruiz
and Christian Gimenez
goals. Clarence Goodson
's goal was disallowed at the end of a frenetic first half in which Pachuca keeper Miguel
saved heroically from Goodson and Ruiz. At the other end, Carlos Rodriguez
hit the post.
Calero stopped Ruiz again early in the
second half and FC Dallas goalie Dario Sala
replied with a diving stop of Gimenez's free kick. Dallas scored in the 75th minute when Bobby Rhine's driven
ball towards Dominic Oduro
evaded both him and Calero for Ruiz to poke into the net. With three minutes left, Adrian
uprooted Damian Alvarez
in the box and Gimenez put away the penalty. Standings:

United dominated at RFK, aided by a red card to Oscar Rojas
in the 49th
minute, yet failed to score a second goal despite outshooting America, 16-2, and taking the lead in the 12th minute. Ben Olsen
, ranging to the
right near the touchline, crossed to the far side, where Christian Gomez
planted a perfectly cushioned header into the wheelhouse of Dyachenko, who stung a
low left-footed drive into the net. Dyachenko nearly returned the favor in the 34th minute with a ball that Gomez launched off the foot of Dulio Davino
against the crossbar.
Wasteful finishes by Luciano Emili
o piled up as the match unfolded and shortly after Rojas's ejection, Josh Gros
scrambled the ball away as Federico Insua
prepared to knock in an equalizer. As had been the case in its opening
match against Morelia, United failed to exploit the man advantage but this time at least did secure the three points.
Dynamo forward Joseph Ngwenya
tucked away a through ball from Brian Ching
with barely 10 seconds elapsed to spark a game rife with chances. Morelia goalie Moises Munoz
saved a close-range header from Ching and late in the match turned away back-to-back drives from Stuart Holden and Dwayne
Houston keeper Zach Wells
saved smartly from Jesus Castillo
just before halftime but with
15 minutes left a mixup presented Morelia with its tying goal. Wade Barrett
shepherded a bouncing ball into the penalty area as Wells dove to
smother it, but it bounced free and Marcio Batista
evaded the scrambling Wells to drive the ball past two Dynamo defenders into the net. Standings:
