Freddy Adu: 'I am very happy'

The Freddy phenomenon died here a long time ago.

It's only now begun in Lisbon, where a crowd of 100 fans and reporters greeted Freddy Adu upon his arrival at Portela Airport from Washington to finalize his contract with Portuguese giant Benfica.

"I am surprised with this reception," he said. "I am very happy. Benfica are a big club."

Benfica signed Adu to a five-year after concluding a deal with MLS for a $2 million transfer fee and agreeing with Adu to a five-year deal that will reportedly pay him slightly more than the $550,000 he was making this year with Real Salt Lake.

Adu and Argentine signing Andres Diaz trained for the first time with Benfica at its Caixa Futebol Campus on Tuesday.

Benfica is in preseason action this weekend when it faces Betis of Spain on Friday and archrival Sporting on Sunday at the Torneio Internacional do Guadiana in the resort town of Vila Real de Santo Antonio.
