Bradley players held in death of teammate Danny Dahlquist

Four young men, including three members of the Bradley men's soccer soccer team and roommates of Dahlquist, were charged with setting a fire that led to the death of their Bradley teammate, Danny Dahlquist.

The 19-year-old Dahlquist, a sophomore, died Sunday of smoke inhalation after the four men allegedly set a fire in his bedroom in their West Peoria, Ill., house by lighting a roman candle under his bedroom door that started a fire.

The men were tried unsuccessfully to save Dahlquist.

Bradley players Nicholas Mentgen, Ryan Johnson and David Crady and Daniel Cox of nearby Illinois Central were charged with two counts of aggravated arson and one count of possession of an explosive or incendiary device.

Mentgen, Johnson and Crady lived in the house. Another roommate and teammate Trevor English was not charged.

Dahlquist is survived by his father Craig Dahlquist (a senior member of the athletic department) and mother Tricia Dahlquist (a member of the school's English department) and six younger siblings.

'Our hearts and prayers go out to the entire Dahlquist family at this most difficult of times,'' Bradley athletics director Ken Kavanagh said in a statement. ''The pain of his passing will be felt well beyond Bradley University, however, as he was also beloved throughout the community.''
