Top-ranked UCLA falls to Notre Dame and Indiana

It was a long Labor Day weekend for UCLA, the No. 1 team in Soccer America's Preseason Men's Top 25 rankings.

The Bruins dropped both games at the adidas/IU Credit Union Hoosier Classic, losing, 2-1, to Notre Dame in overtime on Friday and, 1-0, to Indiana on Sunday.

Alex Yoshinaga's golden goal was the difference Friday night. The Bruins had battled back from 1-0 down to even the score when Chance Myers struck with 38 seconds remaining on an assist by Mike Zaher collected the assist on the play. Joseph Lapira, the 2006 Soccer America Player of the Year, scored the Irish's first goal.

Kevin Noschang's second goal in as many games gave IU a 1-0 win on Sunday before a record crowd of 7,243 as part of Indiana's "Fill the Bill" promotion. The previous mark of 6,000 was set against SMU in 1987.

UCLA was missing the injured David Estrada, the 2006 Soccer America Freshman of the Year, up front. The Bruins were outshot 14-8 and 13-9 in their two games in Bloomington.

Maryland claimed the tournament championship with a 1-1 tie with Indiana on Friday and 3-0 win over Notre Dame on Sunday, edging the Hoosiers based on goal differential.

Maryland's Graham Zusi was named the Offensive MVP of the tournament, while IU's Kevin Alston was named defensive MVP.
