Gonzaga shocks defending men's champ UCSB

Defending NCAA Division I men's champion UC Santa Barbara fell in its 2007 home opener, dropping a 1-0 decision to Gonzaga.

Grant Lundberg scored the game's only goal in the 82nd minute to lead the visiting Zags past UCSB at Harder Stadium two days after they fell to UC Irvine, 1-0.

Santa Barbara controlled possession but couldn't score against Gonzaga.

Bulldog goalkeeper Vito Higgins made two big saves on Spaniard Nick Perera in the first quarter of an hour.
UCSB's best chance came in the 56th minute after sophomore transfer Ciaran O'Brien won a ball on the left side of the field and sent a high cross into the box. where Tino Nunez leaped and sent a header toward the goal, only to have his shot bounce off the crossbar.

After Gonzaga scored, Perera had another chance, but a Bulldog defender recovered to clear the ball off the goal line and preserve the win for the visitors.
