Former Juventus defender Gianluca Pessotto is in critical condition after an apparent suicide attempt, ANSA reports. Pessotto underwent surgery during the night to improve blood circulation around his
ankle, which shattered after the ex-Italy national team defender leapt from the top of Juventus headquarters on Tuesday night. Apparently, Pessotto was "very close" to dying from injuries sustained
during the fall, doctors said. He had multiple fractures and internal bleeding. The former player-turned Juventus sports director was suffering from "psychological" problems according to his wife, who
confirmed he had been suffering from depression. In their report, police said Pessotto climbed to a small, high window and threw himself out clutching a rosary. He landed on a car, which broke his
fall and probably saved his life, doctors said, and then bounced onto another one before hitting the ground. It looks as though he will survive; Pessotto collected 22 caps and played for Italy's 1998
and Euro 2000 teams.
