Tar Heels triumphant in Greensboro

[MIDWEEK ACTION] Visiting North Carolina, ranked No. 2 in the Soccer America Women's Top 25, got goals from by sophomore striker Whitney Engen and reserves Mandy Moraca and Sterling Smith to beat UNC Greensboro, 3-0, before a crowd of 2,844.

Japanese international Mami Yamaguchi scored a hat trick in a 13-minute span of the first half to lead No. 12 Florida State over Troy, 8-0.

Finn Sanna Talonen and Becky Edwards each recorded two goals in the win. The seven goals in the first stanza broke the school record for goals scored in the first half eclipsing the previous record of six set twice before.

Other ACC teams in action on Wednesday were No. 10 Boston College, which beat Boston University, 1-0, and Wake Forest, which knocked off previously unbeaten Louisville, 2-0.

No. 13 South Carolina got a pair of goals from Danila Monteiro and Erin Sullivan and defeated Winthrop, 5-0, at Stone Stadium. Carolina improved its home unbeaten streak to 13 games, dating back to the start of last season.
No. 22 Purdue improved to 4-1-1 with a 3-0 win over Valparaiso. The Boilermakers scored all three goals in the second half as they extended their season-long winning streak to four games.

Sophomore Michelle Compty's two goals in the first half propelled No. 25 Marquette past Green Bay, 2-0, to improve to 5-0-0. The Golden Eagles have tied a school recorded for consecutive shutouts with five.

On Tuesday night, BYU edged Long Beach State, 1-0, on star Katie Larkin's second-half penalty kick. The loss was the thid straight for the 49ers.
