Celebrity Mags Gear Up for Becks' Arrival

Hollywood apparently can't wait for David Beckham's arrival in Los Angeles, according to USA Today. While Beckham's teammates may try to lure him out to low-key L.A. destinations like In-N-Out Burger, Becks is more likely to hang with pals Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes, the paper says.

"They'll fit in so seamlessly that it's almost as if they were born to be here," says celebrity blogger Perez Hilton. "I think they're more high-profile than their famous friends, Tom (Cruise) and Katie (Holmes)." What exactly makes them so high profile in the U.S. right now? As Bryan Alexander, People magazine's deputy Los Angeles bureau chief, says, "Everyone's talking about them," precisely because they aren't familiar names over here. At the moment, everyone wants to know what they're all about, he says.

Is this a good, bad or indifferent thing for MLS? Surely it has to be good if celebrity-obsessed Los Angeles starts watching soccer just because Posh and Becks are here. Celebrity Chef Wolfgang Puck says he's going to start taking his son to games. David's close and newfound celebrity friends will surely pop up, too. And then so will the cameras, and then, perhaps, so will the rest of America.

Let's not get crazy here. Ultimately the product has to be good for the initial rush of publicity to sustain itself.
