ACC men's powers Duke and Maryland rebounded from disappointing losses on Saturday to record wins against tough non-conference foes on Wednesday night -- tuneups for their big showdown on Saturday
night in Durham.
Duke (4-2-0) needed a penalty kick by Mike Grella
in the 79th minute to escape with a 2-1 win over South Carolina before 1,589
fans at Koskinen Stadium. The No. 17 Blue Devils had a 29-9 edge in shots but couldn't put away the Gamecocks until Grella made a move into the goal box with the ball and was taken down by two
Grella set up Paul Dudley for Duke's first goal in the 7th minute. They both have four goals in six games to lead the Blue Devils.
Sophomore Drew Yates
scored his third goal of the season to lead No. 18 Maryland past Old Dominion, 1-0. The young Terrapins (3-2-1) got a chance to do something they
haven't been a position to do this season: protect a slim lead late in the game.
"I thought we played extremely well in the first half and we were unfortunate not to have a second
goal," Maryland coach Sasho Cirovski
said. "In the second half, there was a little more urgency from Old Dominion and we could have handled it better. It
was a new experience for us to be up 1-0 late in the game, but we will improve and do it better the next time."
