SMU recovers to put away Centenary

Junior Richard Oliva scored a pair of goals for No. 11 SMU in a 5-1 win over visiting Centenary.

The Gents took the early lead in the third minute on a goal by Todd Faulkinberry, but 21 seconds later, Oliva finished a crossing pass from sophomore forward Dane Saintus to tie the game at 1-1.

Centenary's chances of staying even with the Mustangs ended in the 15th minute when midfielder Aron Taylor was ejected for hauling Saintus down from behind. Four minutes later, SMU took the lead when Saintus ran on to a long lead pass from Brazilian Bruno Guarda and tapped it under goalie James Speed.

Two first-half goals from senior captain Peter Lowry led No. 14 Santa Clara (4-1-2) to a 2-0 win over San Jose State at Spartan Stadium.

Early in the second half, Lowry was stymied in his bid for a hat trick when his blast hit off the post.

A second-half goal by junior Roger Espinoza provided all the scoring 23th-ranked Ohio State needed to win, 1-0, at Bowling Green.

Two years ago, the Buckeyes visited Cochrane Field ranked as high as 10th in the nation, but lost, 3-2, in double-overtime. This time, Ohio State, concluding a five-game road swing, would not let Bowling Green pull the upset again.
