Bulls Director Agoos on Waterreus, Rivaldo

Ives Galarcep of the North Jersey Herald takes a look at recent New York Red Bulls developments in an interview with Jeff Agoos, the team's technical director, who discussed new signing Ronald Waterreus and the recent Rivaldo rumors.

Waterreus, for those who don't remember him, is the Dutch goalkeeper who put in that spectacular performance against the United States in Foxboro, Mass. in the U.S. team's final warm-up prior to the 2002 World Cup. The Dutch certainly wouldn't have won, 2-0, if Waterreus hadn't made so many incredible saves that day. Agoos says the memory of that performance is part of the reason he pursued the 37-year old keeper. "We want someone who can save the un-savable and he fit right into that category." Galarcep says there's no guarantee Waterreus still has the magic, but he adds that Jeff Conway, last year's starter, failed to exude that quality-especially in big games.

Agoos, meanwhile, killed the rumors linking Rivaldo to the Bulls. "There's no truth to our interest in Rivaldo," he told Galarcep. The former world player of the year continues to be linked with a move to MLS, however. New York still has a designated player slot to fill, and is expected to make at least two more signings before the start of the season.
