Northwestern christens new field with victory

No. 5 Northwestern opened its new Lakeside Field with a 1-0 victory over Chicago area rival Loyola (Ill.), the fifth straight shutout win for the Wildcats (7-0-1), setting a new school record.

The game's only goal came just over six minutes into the contest when defender Drew Ratner delivered a perfect service from deep in Northwestern's end of the field for freshman Matt Eliason, who was able to get behind the Loyola defense to notch his fourth goal of the season, tying him for the team lead.

It was Northwestern's first game played at Lakeside Field, built adjacent to the existing field. The latest addition to Northwestern's athletic facilities is located along the banks of Lake Michigan and features permanent grandstands, press box, new scoreboard and a playing surface designed by FieldTurf.
