Cal State Northridge's 3-0 victory over UCLA on Saturday summed up the state of affairs this fall in the Far West men's soccer.
Northridge's convincing victory kept the Big West unbeaten
in meetings with Pac-10 schools. Indeed, the Big West's overall record in non-conference games is the best of the four Far West Division I men's conferences.
As teams from all four
conferences move into conference play this week, Big West teams Cal Poly and UC Davis, in its first year as a full-time member, have the best records of Far West teams in non-conference play. All
seven Big West teams are above .500, including defending national champion UC Santa Barbara.
The Big West (.673 winning percentage in
non-conference play) leads the Pac-10 (.560), WCC (.532) and MPSF (.479).
Only five of the 26 Far West D1 men's teams have losing records in non-conference play. The WCC's Loyola
Marymount is 2-4-1, but its two wins have come against Top 25 teams New Mexico and Harvard.
Each of the four conferences has one team in this week's Soccer America Top 25: #7 Santa Clara
(WCC), #12 UC Santa Barbara (Big West), #18 UCLA (Pac-10) and #22 New Mexico (MPSF).
Only one Far West D1 men's team is not affiliated this season with a conference: first-year D1 program
Cal State Bakersfield. HEAD-TO-HEAD:
