N.C. State men's coach George Tarantini
recorded his 200th career victory Wednesday afternoon when the Wolfpack downed visiting High Point, 5-0, at Method
The Argentine-born Tarantini is in his 22th year as the Wolfpack's head coach. He came to Raleigh in 1982 to serve as an assistant coach for both the men's and women's programs.
Tarantini, whose younger brother Alberto
played on Argentina's 1978 World Cup championship team, led the Wolfpack to the NCAA Division I semifinals in
1990 and was named the ACC Coach of the Year in 1992 and 1994.
In his early years as N.C. State, fiery Tarantini built some of the most talented teams in the history of college soccer.
Perhaps his greatest coup came as a recruiter came in 1984. He was an assistant coach under Larry Gros
s when he helped convince Tab Ramos
, perhaps the most heralded high school player in the history of American soccer to enroll at N.C. State.
The 1990 team produced four players who
would named to the ACC's 50th Anniversary team: Dario Brose
, Henry Gutierrez
and Roy Lassiter
, who all have long professional careers.
With Ramos (1990, 1994 and 1998) and
(2002 and 2006), N.C. State has been represented on the last five U.S. World Cup teams.
